  • Divisions

The number of teams in each Division and the corresponding game schedule depends on enrollment. Each Division has unique rules geared towards the players' general skill level and knowledge of the game of lacrosse. Given the different rules and increasing level of contact in each Division, all players must play in the appropriate Division for their current grade. Under no condition will a player will allowed to "play up" in a higher division.

    D3 Boys Grades K - 2
Boys in grades K thhrough 2 play a non-contact, highly instructional version of lacrosse. Boys learn very basic lacrosse terminology and fundamentals. These skills are the foundation for a solid "Lacrosse IQ". Games feature five-on-five situations with a lot of action and directed by the coaches on the field. Kindergarteners welcome.

    D2 Boys Grades 3 & 4
Boys in grades 3 and 4 build on the core skills they learned in Division III and play according to rules that emphasize skill development. This Division continues the emphasis on basic lacrosse fundamentals and developing all players' "Lacrosse IQ". We begin to introduce more team concepts, and players will begin to learn the unique skills required to play the different lacrosse positions (attack, midfield, defense, goalie).

    D1 Boys Grades 5 & 6
Boys in grades 5 and 6 continue to master the core fundamentals while learning more advanced skills that increase their "Lacrosse IQ". At this level, players will be introduced to controlled body checking, use of long poles for defenders, and increased size of field. Even if your son has not played lacrosse before, this is still a great time to start.
  • Program Goals

    1) ALL PLAYERS HAVE A POSITIVE EXPERIENCE PLAYING LACROSSE AND WILL WANT TO CONTINUE TO PLAY LACROSSE AT THE NEXT LEVEL
    2) ALL PLAYERS IMPROVE THEIR LACROSSE SKILLS AND BECOME WELL-ROUNDED LACROSSE PLAYERS
    3) ALL PLAYERS IMPROVE THEIR "LACROSSE IQ" AND DEVELOP A BETTER OVERALL UNDERSTANDING OF THE GAME
    4) ALL COACHES AND ASSISTANTS HAVE A REWARDING EXPERIENCE AND WILL WANT TO CONTINUE TO VOLUNTEER IN FUTURE SEASONS
  • Equipment & Uniforms

D3 (K-2nd) Equipment: Players must provide their own lacrosse stick, mouth guard, and cleats (soccer or football - no metal spikes). WYB will lend players a helmet and pair of gloves - this equipment must be returned at the end of the season. Cups are not required but are strongly recommended. No other lacrosse equipment is necessary.

D1 & D2 (3rd-6th) Equipment: Players must provide their own NCAA regulation size lacrosse stick, gloves, arm pads, cleats (no metal spikes), and mouth guard. WYB will lend players a helmet and shoulder pads - this equipment must be returned at the end of the season. Athletic cups are not required but are strongly recommended.

UNIFORMS: Players must purchase a reversible team jersey with a number to wear at all practices and games. Players will keep their jersey at the end of the season and can be used again in future seasons.
  • Tournament Teams

A Worthington Lacrosse tradition, WYB will form “select” tournament teams of advanced players to compete in tournaments in the Columbus area. Players will be selected based on skill level, position strength, athletic ability, and sportsmanship, by a selection committee made up of WYB coaches.

The select team(s) will practice at least one day per week in addition to the rec team practices. An additional fee will apply for all players selected to be on the teams to cover the cost of jerseys, shorts, and tournament fees - usually around $100-$150.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • MY SON IS IN 5TH GRADE AND HAS NEVER PLAYED LACROSSE BEFORE. IS IT TOO LATE TO START?

Absolutely not! It is never too late to start playing lacrosse. Our youth lacrosse program is a developmental league that caters to the various skill levels: beginner to advanced. Most of our players participate in other sports and have picked up the game very quickly.
  • WHEN ARE TEAMS FORMED AND WHEN CAN I EXPECT TO HEAR FROM MY SON'S COACH?

Teams will be formed after the registration period is finished. Teams and coaches are usually determined during the 1st or 2nd week of March and coaches will notify their teams soon after. Practices will usually begin mid-March but that is 100% dependent on weather and field conditions.
  • WHEN DO I PICK-UP THE EQUIPMENT THAT IS PROVIDED BY WYB?

Equipment distribution dates and locations will be determined shortly after the registration period is over. We will usually schedule 2 pickup dates to accommodate busy schedules. If you are unable to make it to one of scheduled pick-up dates, you will need to contact your coach for assistance.
  • WHAT EQUIPMENT IS NOT PROVIDED BY WYB AND WHAT TYPE OF LACROSSE STICK DOES MY SON NEED?

Division 2 and 3 players will need to provided their own gloves and arm pads. Your son will also need a regulation size lacrosse stick. It can be cut down to accommodate the player's height. It is not necessary to spend more than $50 for a decent lacrosse stick.
  • CAN MY SON PLAY SOCCER AND LACROSSE AT THE SAME TIME?

Many of our participants play multiple sports during the spring and although there can be conflicts at times, it can be done. We highly recommend that players attend at least 1 of the regularly scheduled practices per week in order to be ready for the games.
  • IS LACROSSE A VIOLENT SPORT?

Lacrosse is not intended to be a violent sport, but because body checking is introduced at the Division 1 level (5th and 6th grade), there are times when players need to be reigned in by the coaches and referees to teach proper checking techniques in order to keep the game safe. We have rules in place to help prevent games from getting out of control. We do not allow checking for 1st through 2nd graders, but will begin to teach the concepts of legal stick checks at the 3rd grade level.
